Beauty Products I Regret : Anti-Recommendations

‘I’m a beauty blogger’ …

My go-to justification for continuing to buy makeup and skin care products, despite having enough at home to open a small store of my own. My beauty posts are typically reviews or recommendations but today I thought I’d share something a little different. You don’t buy as many beauty products as I do without regretting at least a few of them, so I thought I’d share which recent purchases I regret! Some of them are genuinely terrible and I’d recommend staying well away. Some are okay but I wouldn’t recommend them purely on the basis of knowing that there are better alternatives within the same price mark. Nevertheless, I regret all of the following purchases and would advise finding alternative ways of spending your pennies.

Estee Lauder Perfectly Clean

One of the reasons I felt so let down by this is because I love Estee Lauder makeup, so my expectations were high. Despite not being able to fault the actual results of this cleanser, the formula just isn’t for me and I wouldn’t repurchase it. The best way I can describe how this leaves my face feeling is squeaky clean, just not in a good way. It leaves the same squeaky feeling to my face as bar hand soap leaves to your hands, a strange dryness that’s unpleasant and uncomfortable. If this wasn’t upwards of £20 I wouldn’t have bothered to mention it in the post but there are much nicer alternatives for less money.

Revolution Eye-Shadow Palettes

I went through a phase of thinking that these are amazing. In fairness and for their price point, they are. I regret buying these because I have so many palettes and I never find myself reaching for any of my Revolution ones. If you’re new to palette’s then these are a good place to start but if you already have good quality ones then I wouldn’t bother. If you’re anything like me then you’ll shove them in the back of a drawer for them to never see daylight again.

Beauty Products I Regret

Malibu Lip Balms & Lip Smackers

I’ve spoken about some of my favourite lip products before but honestly when it comes to balms I don’t think I’m too fussy. You can get amazing lip balms for next to nothing and can even pick them up in Tesco; Nivea, Burt’s Bees.. there are so many inexpensive brands to choose from. I would never ever buy Malibu lip balms or lip smackers again. Both are cheap, have awful smells and tastes and to top it all off, provide little to no benefit to your lips (from my experience anyway).

Beauty Products I Regret

Benefit It’s Potent! Eye Cream

This is another product which I almost don’t want to slate because it’s okay; it does its job and I even mentioned it in a favourites post a while back. Since then though, I’ve tried so many other eye creams, all which come in at a (sometimes much) lower price point. I rarely reach for this any more and if I’m spending around £30 for 14g of eye cream then it needs to impress me much more than this one does. I love Benefit as a whole so it’s a shame.

L’Oreal Glitter Top Coat & Paradise Pomade

I’m usually a L’Oreal fan and swear by their pressed powder and pen eye-liner. I recently picked up their Paradise Pomade in a 3 for 2 offer as I love their mascara from the same collection. I’ve used this twice and have already re-homed it. The brush is terrible which is no surprise really, I tend to find that applicators that come with drugstore products aren’t worth their weight. What I was really disappointed by was the product itself. It didn’t blend well and didn’t stay in place despite very stressless days. This wore off quickly and ended up looking patchy and quite frankly, terrible. I love the Ardell pomade for around the same price and the brush that comes with it is actually really good.

Beauty Products I Regret

I hope that this proves helpful as products NOT TO invest in, there are too many amazing products out there to be let down by the bad or the mediocre!

I have so many of the old Revolution palettes stacked at the back of my wardrobe. I used to think they were amazing! The new formula is so much better but I guess they were pretty innovative at the time.

I did too! I definitely don’t think they’re bad I just never get any use out of them! x

I totally agree with the Benefit eye cream, I never really got along with it and wondered if it was actually doing anything for my skin! Love these types of posts x

It’s just so mediocre for the price tag isn’t it! I’m glad you agree! x

This is such a cool concept for a post! It’s really refreshing reading honest reviews on blogs, thank you for sharing this! 🙂

I loved this blog post, such a good idea. I feel as beauty bloggers we try out so many products and normal only the ones we love end up on our blogs, so its so refreshing to read about products you didn’t get on with either.

    • August 25, 2018 / 8:33 am

Thank you I’m so glad! I agree and they can be equally as helpful so that other people don’t waste their money too! x

I loved this post! I find I buy eye shadow palettes and hardly use them as I’m not the best with eyeshadow so I don’t know why I get sucked in and buy them so often😂

Thanks Brooke! I buy so many too and it’s crazy because they last so long don’t they?! x

Lovely Post, them Malibu lipsticks look the dream

  7. August 24, 2018 / 8:29 pm

I completely agree with the Revolution palettes, I think that they are perfect for when you are just starting to use them or you are experimenting but I no longer use mine when I have a range of more luxury palettes.

I’m glad you agree! It’s such a shame but they just end up never being touched don’t they? x

I really loved this! I love anti-hauls in general but I’ve never heard any of these mentioned before so it was a very original anti-haul (I find a lot of big beauty bloggers all anti haul the same things.) I always wonder if I’m missing out of the revolution palettes because I went straight to high end eyeshadow (I think it’s worked out for the better as I own less palettes and use them all) so it was reassuring to know that I’m not!

Aw thanks Jas I’m so glad! I really don’t think you’re missing out on the Revolution, mine just sit at the back of the drawer and they although they’re decent they don’t top any of my high end palettes! x

  10. August 24, 2018 / 9:41 pm

I love posts like this. Explaining why you wouldn’t recommend something can often be more useful than writing a glowing review. I use the same excuse when buying something I absolutely don’t need. I feel the same way about Revolution palettes. I only have two and they aren’t bad by any means, but they never see the light of day. I haven’t tried anything else you’ve mentioned but at least I know not to bother now x

I completely agree, I feel like anti-recommendations are so useful just in a different way! I’m hearing that a lot about Revolution palettes and it’s nice to know that I’m not an odd one out on this haha! x

  11. August 25, 2018 / 3:38 am

I love how you’re taking beauty blogging at a different approach – the anti-recs xD. I mean I’d expect everyone to bump into products they end up not liking. That’s often me with clothes XD. It’s a bummer when you don’t get a bang for however much you spend on makeup. Hate that feeling of having a weird feeling from a face wash. You’re supposed to feel great after @__@.

Oh man, it’s a bummer that the Malibu lip balm wasn’t all that great. Though, it goes to show that the funky flavors can actually be funky. I hate it when the brush is not up to par! That’s the same with my Clinique eyebrow brush – it’s really bad to the point where I bought a separate brush to use the product @__@. Thanks for sharing!

Haha thanks Nancy! I love experimenting with beauty products and I feel like these kinds of posts can be helpful just in a different way! I agree, I love skincare and products that make your face feel fresh and soft- anything else I can’t use! I find that so many brushes that come with products are terrible, I’d much rather they make the product a fraction cheaper and just don’t include applicators! x

This is a great idea for a post! Thanks for sharing your anti-recommendations! 🙂

Hmm, yeah I guess the revolution palettes are only really going to be of use if someone doesn’t have many other palettes. There are so many beautiful palettes available and even if they are slightly more expensive, they’re definitely worth the price!

  17. August 26, 2018 / 8:30 pm

I’ve got to agree with you regarding the Malibu lip balms. I’ve never been a major fan of them and when I’m looking for a lip balm, I always reach for my carmex or plain ol’ vaseline!

Great post bc I feel like so many ppl just rave about.amazing products, and it’s refreshing to see what’s not.so good. I get what you mean when you say you just don’t reach enough for the pallete. That’s what happens to me with so many products.

  19. August 26, 2018 / 8:46 pm

Ah this is such a helpful post. Probably more helpful than an actual haul / recommendations to be honest! I’ve been eyeing up those Malibu lip balms for a while but now know to avoid! Thank you for sharing xx

I love the idea of this post! I have so much unused makeup products that I regret buying simply for the fact that I’ve never used them..

  21. August 26, 2018 / 9:32 pm

This is such an interesting idea for a post, I have so many of these to share haha! It’s crazy to me that you’ve included Revolution palettes as I genuinely use mine SO much more than my high-end ones now. I actually find them a lot more pigmented and blendable than my Naked palettes and I totally regret spending so much on them now! I haven’t tried anything from Estee Lauder but I bloody hate that dry soap clean feeling, can’t believe one of their products has that effect for their reputation and price point!

Oh that’s so interesting, I’m glad that you get on so well with yours! I was so shocked at the Estee Lauder too- I think I’ll be sticking to their makeup and avoiding their skincare from now on! xx

  22. August 26, 2018 / 10:28 pm

Loved this post! Everyone finds products that they don’t enjoy but we’re always so busy posting about things we love. I haven’t tried anything that you’ve posted about but now I know it’s probably for the best!

I do love Revolution’s eyeshadow palettes and probably have way too many of them. However I did buy one of their palettes which was a dupe for Subculture and just couldn’t get along with it. Their formulas can be a bit hit and miss.

We are so the same! I keep buying things like eyeshadow palettes thinking I”m going to use them and they just sit in the back of my drawer lol. Such a great idea for a post!

    • August 27, 2018 / 10:00 am

It’s awful isn’t it, I’m making a conscious effort not to do this anymore but it’s just so tempting when you’re in the store haha! Thanks lovely x

  25. August 27, 2018 / 7:23 pm

I love this post, Sophie! I think most of the times it gets really overwhelming to see people encourage others to buy products that tend out to be horrible. Thanks for being real! I was kind of bummed to see that Malibu Lip Balms aren’t as great as they seem since I’m very minimal on make-up and love to shop (mostly) for lip balms! Have you heard of Hurraw Lip Balms?! They’re amazing – their coconut one is the best!

  27. August 27, 2018 / 8:51 pm

This is a really good idea for a post Soph! We are always hearing what products we should be buying so it makes a refreshing change to see what’s not so great. It’s good to know about the Malibu lip balms and lip smackers, the bright colourful packaging would entice me in. I already use Nivea and Burts Bees so it’s nice to know that the cheaper brands are just as good. Thank you for sharing 💖 xx

  28. August 29, 2018 / 11:20 am

These kind of posts are my favourite! No one talks about the products that didn’t work for them or they regret, but I find them really interesting to read.

I second your reasons for regretting the revolution palettes. I brought some as they were branded good dupes of high end ones, but I still reach for the high end ones far more. They’re not bad palettes especially for the price, they just don’t quite trump a good Too Faced or Urban Decay formula!

  32. August 29, 2018 / 11:07 pm

I completely agree with you when it comes to the Revolution palettes! I picked them up because they were cheap and cheerful, but I never use them, because I tend to stick to Too Faced or Urban Decay. Seems like such a silly purchase now I think about it. 😂

    • August 30, 2018 / 9:04 am

This seems to be the case for a lot of people! They’re not bad palettes but no one with high end ones ever tends to reach for them from what I can gather in the comments! I’m glad it’s not just me! x

    • September 3, 2018 / 10:49 am

Oh I haven’t used them so I’ll have to pick a couple up, thanks for the recommendation! x
