Five Tips For Better Time Management

Five Tips For Better Time Management

Time is more precious than almost anything else, it’s something most of us wish we had more of. We say that we need more hours in the day to get things done and we long for more time spent doing things we love with the people we love. Recently I’ve been considering how I spend my time. Finding a perfect balance between work and play sometimes feels impossible but I’m determined to stop wishing away my work days and only enjoying a certain percentage of my life.

I often tend to pile my plates a little high, which leaves me busy juggling (and sometimes dropping) them. In order to be as efficient as possible with my time, there are certain habits which I’ve had to pick up. Some only save me minutes, but minutes turn to hours and every one is precious.

1. Plan Ahead

Sometimes its all too easy to focus on the here and now but planning ahead is always a good idea. I’m serious, can you actually think of a situation in which at least some level of forward planning won’t benefit you? I can’t. Planning ahead is often reserved for slightly larger scale life events; weddings, retirement, annual holidays and who’s hosting Christmas. Think smaller. It’s very boring adult stuff, but grocery planning saves me so time, money and effort. I know what I need to buy so I don’t dilly dally around the store or end up having to make return ‘I forgot milk’ trips. I also know what I’ll be eating for the next week which prevents the ‘what should we eat tonight’ argument. My waistline and wallet thank me too as there are minimal last minute trips to the nearest McDonald’s because there isn’t anything in the house.

I forward plan as much of life as I can. Setting daily, weekly and even yearly goals, both professional and personal, can save a hell of a lot of time. One of my biggest regrets is not thinking about my career goals early enough or planning out my education. Since 6th form, I’ve been in a little bit of a limbo and have been trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. There have been many arguments between my head and heart about whether I should take a practical route or follow my dreams. Right now I’m doing a bit of both, but I wish I’d have picked up the pace earlier on.

2. Schedule

I like to write daily ‘to do’ lists, which are obviously more lax than a schedule but they give my day structure. Without a ‘to do’ list on my days off, I’m liable to find myself halfway through a packet of biscuits and 8 episodes into Friends.

As a content creator, I review my blog and my socials often and make sure to schedule in about a weeks worth of content. I use Buffer to schedule tweets which ensures that I don’t forget to promote my content. I also use UNUM or Planoly to plan my Instagram feed, then on Instagram I create drafts of these photos, add relevant hashtags and sometimes captions. This ensures that I know what I’m posting at least a few days in advance and throughout the week all I have to do is press publish because I’ve already completed the time-consuming part.

Time Management

3. Stop Procrastinating

I’m fully in support of down days and taking plenty of time away from being traditionally productive to enjoy or to look after yourself.

Procrastinate:
prə(ʊ)ˈkrastɪneɪt/
verb
gerund or present participle: procrastinating
  1. delay or postpone action; put off doing something.
“the temptation will be to procrastinate until the power struggle plays itself out”

On an average day, suffocating everything you need to do with your duvet and binge-watching shows you’ve watched twenty times before is not self-care, it’s lazy. I should know. I recently learned a three minute rule in which you dive right in and spend at least three minutes on a task that you’ve been putting off. Usually, you realize that getting started was the hardest part and now that you have, you’re able to carry on and put a big fat satisfying tick against it on your ‘to do’ list.

4. Don’t Make Life Hard for Yourself

I am the Queen of making life more difficult for myself. I’m the type of person who spends 15 minutes trying to pick up a thousand pieces of spilt rice off the floor with her hands just because she can’t be bothered to grab the dustpan and turn it into a 2 minute job. Don’t be me. Don’t make a bake sale into a bake off, your packet mix brownies will taste better than someone else’s le gateau vert anyway (can you tell I’ve been watching Bake Off). It’s silly to read books you don’t enjoy or understand just because you feel like people judge your usual rom-com’s. Do keep your things somewhat organised. It will save you half an hour trying to locate your hairbrush every morning.

Don’t make life hard for yourself.

5. Prioritise

If you have a bucket-list anywhere as long as mine, then there simply isn’t enough time to complete it, fact. Many of us share the same desires to see the world and experience new things. Unfortunately, if you’re an average Joe, then you’ll have to learn to prioritize. There are some things in life which we feel an unfair obligation to invest our time into. If it’s genuinely a waste of time and nobody will be worse off for it, then learn to say no.

If you’ve seen Christopher Robin recently then you’ll have had a reminder that sometimes you have to let someone down, it’s just up to you who that’s going to be.

I’m so glad you think so! I love planning too and think its essential to most things! x

  1. September 13, 2018 / 5:20 pm

This is the most perfect post for me right now, I always seem to run out of hours in the day and never get everything I want done. A daily to-do list helps me loads though and keeps me focused. I love the idea of the three minute rule, like you say the hard part is just the getting started. I’ll remember that one when I’m putting off doing to housework next time he he. Thank you for sharing Soph, great suggestions! <3 xx

Oh I’m so glad! I hope the three minute rule helps you too, remembering it is a little difficult sometimes but I’m hoping to make it a habit because it really helps! x

  2. September 13, 2018 / 5:25 pm

This was such a relatable read, Sophie. I haven’t come across the three-minute rule before but it makes perfect sense, I’m going to use it from now on. I’m pretty good with planning in terms of work schedules and shopping lists but goals, not so much. I used to beat myself up when I didn’t achieve them so now I don’t set them. Can I just say your photos for this post are gorgeous BTW? And, if it helps, I’ve been there with the rice too, haha! xx

Thanks Lisa! Sometimes I forget about it but I’m trying to turn it into a habit because it really works when you use it, I hope it helps you too! Haha I’m glad I’m not the only one who sometimes goes for the most difficult option! x

I swear, scheduling is literally the only way that I stay on top of everything blog wise! You should really try Hootsuite if you have an Instagram business account – it allows you to properly schedule Instagram posts and uploads them for you!

Same here! I don’t know why but Hootsuite doesn’t like my accounts and I’ve never been able to use it, which is such a shame! x

This watch is so pretty! Love the rose gold! Time management has been a massive issue in the past but I am getting better at it. Prioritizing and planning ahead has massively helped!

  6. September 13, 2018 / 6:27 pm

This is a fabulous post (and I can’t believe I’ve still not seen Christopher Robin, agh!). I’m pretty good with time in the sense that I don’t procrastinate hardly ever, I’m always early for things, I always schedule blog content in advance and tweets at the beginning of the day but I still don’t feel like I use my time wisely. Giving myself “down time” is something I really struggle with because I feel like I’m wasting my time by doing nothing productive and that’s such an unhealthy habit to break! xxx

    • September 13, 2018 / 8:09 pm

Thank you! It’s great that you’re super productive but a shame that you don’t get much down time! I know it sounds crazy but have you tried scheduling it in? I’d maybe book a spa break or write a few films or books on your to- do list so that you feel like you’re achieving something by doing not a lot! x

Really good tips, I’m so guilty of all of this! X

  13. September 14, 2018 / 5:48 pm

These are really good time management tips! I honestly wouldn’t be able to function if I didn’t have a to-do list of some form, but I’m trying to remind myself that it’s okay to not do everything on it. Thank you for the 3-minute rule idea! I’ve gotten better at not procrastinating but there are still some things that take me forever to start, but once I do I realize they’re not as bad as I thought they would be. Also, that watch is so pretty!

My life is so hectic. I have a full time job, a part time job plus I’m a part time student and train at taekwondo several times a week so these are handy tips.
When you’ve got so much going on, you really need to prioritise and often my uni work gets pushed back until last minute when really it should be at the top!

You sound as busy as I am! I hope these help you as much as they’ve helped me, I know what you meant about Uni work being pushed until the last minute, I’ve been really trying to tackle that too x

  15. September 14, 2018 / 9:54 pm

This post is definitely something I need to memorise! Procrastination is my number one enemy and I don’t even want to think about how much time I waste instead of being productive… I’m going to try the three minute rule because like you said, it’s often the getting started and motivated part that is the hardest! Thank you for your helpful tips 🙂

    Great tip!

  19. September 14, 2018 / 11:47 pm

I definitely agree that planning ahead is always a good idea. I just recently bought a planner so that way every night before I go to sleep I could write down what exactly I plan to do the next day. Nothing is more satisfying than ticking something off a list!

I haven’t thought of setting goals for the week though so I’ll have to try that out. This is my first year not returning to University, I graduated in May, so it’s a lot like I’m in a bit of limbo trying to make some sort of day to day structure as I constantly look for jobs & apply.

I have just recently made a schedule for my coding blog with my sister in terms of content for the next few months and wow when I tell you I’m surprised I hadn’t done this with my own actual blog like! Wow so much time saved from just setting time aside and making a schedule.

Procrastination is actually my middle name half the time haha but scheduling and getting a planner has definitely made me more organized!

I’m in love with your watch, it’s so nice and classic!

I totally agree, I love being able to tick things off of a list! Blog scheduling saves so much time and panic doesn’t it? I’m glad you’ve found it as helpful as I have. Thanks Sahara! x

  20. September 15, 2018 / 2:15 am

I struggle most with not making things too hard on myself. I tend to take on too much and then feel like I’m drowning. Thanks for the great reminder to slow down and prioritize.

    • September 15, 2018 / 8:03 am

I know the feeling and then you end up spreading yourself too thin and don’t do any of it to your full ability! You’re welcome, I hope you manage to let some of it go and reap the rewards! x

  21. September 15, 2018 / 5:01 am

I agree with you about time! It’s very precious and we should be focusing on the things that matter. These are great tips to be better with our own time management. I love using a planner to list the to do’s! Planning ahead goes a long way. I saved myself so many times for doing so.
MAJOR YES on not making life hard for ourselves. I live for templates for this reason XD. Thanks for sharing these tips!!

Fab 5 tips Soph! I love writing a to do list, I enjoy the satisfaction of ticking things off as I complete them. It also allows me to know what I need to focus on 🙂 the procrastinating aspect is my weakness I can spend hours on social media achieving nothing… taking time out for yourself is something I need to consider doing for wellness and helping my mind switch off!

    • September 16, 2018 / 10:04 am

Thanks Emma! I love to-do lists too! I’m the same when it comes to social media I’m afraid and try and justify it as spending time ‘engaging and growing my brand’ haha! x

  23. September 15, 2018 / 11:01 pm

This post is so relatable that I am the same as you no. 4 I don’t know why but there are just moments where I make things harder for myself. Planning ahead and scheduling are hugely important for me but I find I procrastinate or get distracted fairly easily, for example I’ll start researching a blog post and get lost on the WWW. Then the post takes a lot longer to get written.

    • September 17, 2018 / 10:42 am

Haha I totally relate, it’s so easy to get distracted isn’t it?! x

  28. September 17, 2018 / 1:06 am

Ah I love this post! I completely agree with letting go of books that you’re not enjoying. It can be so ingrained that when we start a book whether we like it or not that we should finish it. But I find that sticking with a book I’m not enjoying makes me not want to read at all, which is no good.

It;’s way better to put that book down and pick something up that will actually bring you value for your time.

    • September 17, 2018 / 10:29 am

I feel the same and completely understand what you mean! x

  29. September 18, 2018 / 6:13 pm
