Looking After Ourselves
I feel like 2018 is the year of looking after ourselves. Wellness, and the importance of mental health days are concepts which I’m seeing an awful lot of, and I’m 100% down for it. One of my favourite places of well being and relaxation is the Center Parcs Aqua Sana Spa which I’m headed off to again on Sunday! Last time I was there I read all about small, everyday ways of promoting well-being in your life. Although I find reading articles like these both beneficial and enjoyable, they typically remind me of healthy habits which I already know. Tips like; make sure you get enough sleep, eat natural, healthy foods, and limit your screen time. I’m definitely guilty of eating bad food and too much screen time but I have the sleep covered.
The tip which really interested me though was tea related. Everyone loves a cup of tea. The advice which really amazed me was that regularly drinking it can dramatically reduce your chances of getting dementia. In fact, after some further research, I’ve learned that studies suggest that green tea can provide many more astounding health benefits. They include helping to prevent cancer, boosting metabolic rates and improving memory. This year I’ve been trying to focus more on both my physical and mental health. I’ve implemented a few dramatic lifestyle changes like working out at least twice a week and trying to eat more healthily. I’ve also made a fair few smaller changes, like getting up earlier, substituting a few mindless TV evenings for those curled up with a book instead, drinking far more water and now, green tea too.
For a few months now, I’ve been making a conscious effort to calm my mind. One of the ways I’ve been doing this is by simply making time to be less busy. My mornings in the sunshine accompanied by a cup of tea and a book have become invaluable to me. Apparently, they’re also great for both my mental and physical health. The last few months of developing this particular healthy lifestyle habit have allowed me more than enough time to trial a whole range of Adagio’s teas. I’m now an official convert. They were kind enough enough to send me some of their sample packages so I’ve now tried a huge variety of their flavoured teas. My favourite packet has been The Orchard White, which contains fruity strawberry, peach and blueberry flavours. Although I know that a lot of people assume that loose leave teas are difficult, Adagio’s ingenuiTEA pot set makes the process so easy, and the glassware is just the most aesthetically pleasing cup I’ve ever owned. Their iced teas are as yummy as their normal loose leaf. I also love adding fresh fruit to them for even more health benefits.
Recently I’ve been thinking about the concept of need, and that our culture grossly over-uses the word. There are a lot of things which we want to own, experience, or get ticked off of our lists. The thing is, few of them are situations of need. What I think all of us genuinely need, is the time to look after ourselves. Almost everything else can wait.
