Product Empties | January & February

Jan19 Product Empties

The product empties challenge is something I began last year in an attempt to minimise my makeup collection. Although my drawers are still fairly packed, I am slowly but surely whittling them down so that they only feature products I love. Over the past two months I’ve finished off some great products.. and had one that was destined to the bin way before its time.

Makeup

Collection Sheer Loose Powder | £2.99

I repurchase this over and over again. It’s a great baking powder and is super affordable too.

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer | £4.19

I’ve repurchased this even more times than I have the powder and it even featured in my last product empties. I have a couple of different shades, one for actually concealing and one for highlighting under the eyes and the bridge of the nose. You won’t find a better concealer for this price point anywhere.

Maybelline FIT me! Concealer | £5.99

This is quite a nice creamy concealer for a good price. It’s lightweight so sits comfortably under the eyes without creasing. Most of the concealers I have with around the same level of coverage can be quite drying, so this one is a favourite.

Crown All Day Setting Spray | £10.00

This is a good product but the spray function lets it down. It definitely doesn’t generate a fine mist that’s comfortable to use directly onto the face. It lets out too much product and basically just soaks your face, which I’m not okay with. Instead I’ve been using this to dampen my beautyblender before applying foundation.

Hair Care

Merlin Nourish Plus Stabilising Daily Colour Power Shampoo | £11.85

I reviewed a few hair care products from Fabriah recently and the shampoo was the first to bite the dust. I’ll let you read the full review for more information but to summarise: it’s a yes from me.

Skincare

Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel | £32.00

I swear by Dermalogica skincare and their cleansing gel is one of my skincare staples. The only cleanser that could possibly contend in similarity of product and results is Clinque’s Liquid Facial Soap Mild. For my usual combination skin, both work wonderfully but if the Dermalogica is definitely the best for when my skin is feeling more sensitive (I rarely suffer with eczema) than usual.

Revuele Argan Oil Eye Elixir | £2.14

I’ve tried a lot of eye creams and this one is not only one of the best but perhaps the cheapest too. It’s nice and light so sinks in comfortably and moisturises well.

Clinique Pore Refining Solutions | £39.00

Whilst I’m disappointed that I’ve still not found the miracle cure for my large pores, this one comes the closest by a long way. Mind you, for it’s price point it should. I’m very sceptical of pore refining skincare products generally and after using this for so long I’d lost track of whether it was actually helping at all. I didn’t immediately repurchase this and after around two weeks of skipping it out of my skincare regime I’ve definitely noticed a negative effect. Although it won’t magic away your pores, it made mine appear much smaller (I’d say it roughly halved the size of mine) and I’ll definitely be repurchasing.

Health Point Charcoal Clay Mask

This claims to tighten pores, moisturise, detoxify and soothe. I’d agree with the two latter and I’d also chuck in that it does a really good job of brightening too. I really like this mask but when linking it I really struggled to find anywhere that actually sold it rather than somewhere which just provides information. For that reason I’m likely to not bother repurchasing it and to go for the L’Oreal mask that inspired it instead.

Wake Skincare Eye Gel | £16.95

I featured this in a highlights post last February and it’s only now making my empties! I’ve really enjoyed using this in the mornings as its gel consistency is soothing and cooling- perfect for puffy morning eyes.

EyeWake Anti Wrinkle Moisturising Cream | £16.95

Last and most certainly least is this little number from Eyewake. I’m sure that this comes from the same company as the Wake skincare eye gel above so I was a little confused by the mixed branding. I actually positively reviewed this on Amazon and really enjoyed it for the first few months of its use. That is, until it went bad. After around 3-4 months of being opened it just turned, much like gone-off milk. Not only did it begin to change consistency but it also smelled off. I know all beauty products do have a shelf-life but I’ve never come across one this short before. I had to throw away around a quarter of a jar and it’s definitely put me off wanting to use this product again.

I loved this post, Sophie! So interesting about the EyeWake moisturiser, I’ve literally never heard of that happening with a beauty product! I wonder if it had been made many months (or even years) prior to selling, which is why it went off so quickly? Very strange. Also, I tried a sample of the Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque and that was incredible for reducing the appearance of pores – might be worth trying if you haven’t already?! I’ve been meaning to purchase it too!

Thank you! I was actually gifted it on release so it can’t have been that! Ooh thank you so much for the recommendation- I’ll definitely be picking that up as I’ve been meaning to try out Kiehl’s for a while! x

I love the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer but currently I’ve been reaching more for the Maybelline Fit Me! Concealer as the matching foundation works really well with my skin type 💛

They’re both great concealers aren’t they? I use them both for different things, I do find the Collection one much more drying x

Ohh, it’s such a shame when products go bad. I know even natural products usually last around 6 months after opening.
I also have huge pores and still I haven’t find the solution. I can only manage to cover them, but I never actually made them smaller.
I enjoyed reading your post. I always enjoy watching this type of videos on youtube, so it was nice to read sth similar. 🙂

Ooo the Maybelline fit me concealer sounds good! I’m looking for a creamy concealer with quite good coverage as I find my current ones a little dry (Collection one you mentioned & the Nars complete matte concealer) I’ll pick it up! Xx

Dermalogica is my absolute favourite brand for skincare, I’ve never found products that make my skin glow like their products do! The special cleansing gel is my second favourite, microfoliant being my first – I bloody LOVE that stuff. I used to use the Collection concealer and I adored it but it started making me spotty so I swapped for the Revolution conceal and define and I’m so glad I did – I swear by that concealer and now the foundation! I’m yet to try the FIT me concealer but I used to religiously use the foundation so I’d definitely like to give it a go!

I honestly thought that was a typo when I saw the price of that eye cream, that’s amazing! I really need to work on trying to cut down my collection a little and use a few things up. I really like fit me as someone with dry skin, a lot of concealers make my undereye flakey (not cute as I’m sure you can imagine), so I always like it when I find a creamier option x

It’s so good isn’t it?! I’ve been working on it for a while and I honestly I don’t feel like I’m reducing it much yet but it’s definitely not growing anymore which is always good haha! It’s a lovely creamy one isn’t it? Definitely the least drying of all of my cheaper ones x

I love how concise your empties are! I’m so fascinated with what people use in their routines and how they feel about the products. It’s a cool way to get quick reviews on products.

I love the photos from this post! I’ve heard a lot of good things about the dermalogica brand. I haven’t tried any of their products personally but I know that they’re there if I ever decide I want to try something new. Thanks for sharing!

I have to repurchase this Collection Loose Powder, I’ve completely forgotten about it! I love the Fit Me concealer, one of my favourite drugstore concealers. I love reading these types of posts, I can note products and check them out the next time I go to Boots/Superdrug or online. Great post as always x
