The Importance of Self-Love (& What To Gift Yourself This Valentines)

The Importance of Self-Love (& What To Gift Yourself This Valentines)

I’m going to make it clear right off the bat that I love Valentines day and do celebrate it in the traditional sense. In fact, when this post goes live I’ll be enjoying a romantic luxury Spa Break with my other half. I’m up for any excuse to celebrate love, show appreciation and well, a wine and dine.

Celebrating love in the traditional relationship sense is something that feels right in my life right now. However that’s not to say that I don’t fully support any celebrations of love, be it buying flowers for your Nan or throwing a Galentines with your closest friends.

BUT WHAT ABOUT SELF LOVE?

Just for a moment, forget Valentines and with it your utter admiration for a significant other. Ask yourself how often you show yourself any appreciation? It’s unlikely that you’d ever consider yourself your own favourite person, but you should be at least one of them. The aim of this thought exercise isn’t to persuade you that no-one else matters, but to help you realise how much you do. In moderation, the treat yourself mentality is an important aspect of self-love and a fundamental step in showing yourself some possibly overdue appreciation. Actively acknowledging and acting on your own happiness is empowering and important.

HOW TO SHOW IT

There are so many ways of showing yourself some appreciation, from treating your body well and staying healthy, to expanding your mind with travel and knowledge. For now though, lets start with one of the easiest ways: retail therapy. Buying a gift for yourself should be the easiest thing in the world, after all, only you know what you really want. If treating yourself is something you don’t do very often though, I have some ideas and inspiration for you.

New Lingerie
The right set of underwear will make you feel amazing. New sets are always a nice treat and a failsafe option as long as you take a trip to a proper lingerie store so that you can try out different fits. Don’t cheap out, good quality bras will last much longer than anything you could pick up from Primark, and don’t forget, this is a treat not a necessity.

High End Makeup or Skincare
Some high-end beauty products are ludicrously priced and outside of the usual budget. If you’re anything like me, that won’t stop you wanting them. My purse prevents me from spending £25 per lipstick on a regular basis, but what happens in Selfridges Beauty Hall, stays in Selfridges beauty hall (and the receipts stay hidden).

If you’d like to know which high end products are worth the money I recently spoke about a few of my beauty staples. Eclat Skin recently gifted me their beautiful Valentines PR package and there’s nothing better than freshening up your skincare routine.

Valentines

Luxury Bath Products
Bath products are something most of us use but very rarely actually treat ourselves to. Skip past the Dove isle for once and indulge in something a little higher end (I’d recommend Laura Mercier for a real treat).

A New Fragrance
There’s something about a new perfume that can put a new spring in your step too. They last a good while too so a high end one is a good investment.

A Book (Or Two)
Treats don’t have to cost a fortune. Pick up a book and the real treat is allowing yourself some time to sit down and enjoy it. I’m terrible for multi-tasking my way through life, scrolling through my phone and doing email admin whilst also trying to keep up with a film. Sitting down with a cup of tea and a book is some alone time I’ve truly appreciated lately.

A Favourite Tipple
I’ve never been a big drinker but am partial to a liqueur hot chocolate every now and again. The Hotel Chocolat Salted Caramel Vodka Liqueur is a really indulgent pick.

Fresh Flowers
Fresh flowers have the ability to effortlessly brighten up a whole room. You don’t have to go far to treat yourself, just pick some up at the store and enjoy having them around. Recently I’ve actually been sourcing some from the garden!

Valentines

Indulgent Chocolates
I’m not talking about your standard bar of Galaxy. I’m talking about the kind that Matilda steals from Miss Truchballs house. The kind you only ever buy other people as gifts. You deserve the expensive chocolate once in a while.

Scented Candles
My house has a stockpile of scented candles. Not everyone thinks of them as essential, but they do make such a difference to the ambiance. If you’re feeling like you really deserve a treat, indulge in a new candle, bath products, a book and some chocolates. Why not?

New Bedding
It’s almost unbelievable how dramatically new bedding can allow you a better nights sleep. I always look for bedding in TK Maxx. They have fantastic quality high-end bedding (think DKNY or Ralph Lauren for a fraction of the price). If you’re looking to make more dramatic bedding changes then read my recommendations here.

I am in team “treat yourself all year round” but i get how much pressure can be on you on Valentine’s Day, so even more reason to treat yourself. I have not bought new lingerie in ages, maybe i should treat myself to that

    • February 15, 2019 / 10:21 pm

Oh I totally agree that self-love (and any love for that matter) should be an all-year-round thing, but Valentines is definitely a good excuse to put it into practise! x

Lovely ideas! Thanks for sharing – and that vodka sounds good, and I don’t even like vodka!

    • February 15, 2019 / 10:22 pm

I’m glad you think so! I hate vodka but love this – it barely tastes alcoholic! x

  3. February 14, 2019 / 5:38 pm

These are some great ideas. I don’t often treat myself and, when I do, it’s usually something expensive. But I’m going to take your advice here and finally get myself some new lingerie, and some new bedding. Great post!

    • February 15, 2019 / 10:25 pm

Thank you! There’s nothing wrong with saving and treating yourself to expensive things once in a while! New lingerie and bedding will have you feeling like a new woman though! Enjoy x

Self-love is definitely something I used to practice a lot more than I do now. Since moving into our own apartment, starting working for myself and saving and preparing for travelling, it really is something that I’ve neglected. This post has definitely inspired me to take at least just one day out for myself however, and next week I’m going to schedule some time in for a long hot bath, a good read of my book and wear my cosiest pyjamas! xx

I totally relate to that, having more to spend your money on naturally leaves you less to treat yourself with. That sounds like a wonderful idea- have a great lazy day! x

  5. February 14, 2019 / 5:42 pm

Soph, you’re absolutely right, Valentine’s Day should also be about self-love as well, whether you’re in a relationship or not. I’m very guilty of not paying much attention to myself, but some of your suggestions are spot on. The Hotel Chocolat liqueur sounds lovely, as do skin and bath care treats. Fresh flowers are always a winner for me (loving your hellebores and ivy posy, that’s so pretty, I’m going to pick some for our house this weekend). Lovely post with some great tips, thank you! x

I love this post, Soph! You are so right, self-love is so important and these are such fab suggestions! It’s nice to treat ourselves once in a while to something a little luxurious and like you say, good quality will always last longer. I recently treated myself to some new bedding, it wasn’t hugely expensive but it did make a big difference, and it made my bedroom look so cosy. Thank you for sharing, Happy Valentines Day and hope you are having a wonderfully relaxing Spa Break! <3 xx

Thank you! I’m glad you think so- it’s incredible the difference that a new duvet cover can make to the feel of the room and the comfort isn’t it?! I had the best time, thank you x

Self-love is so important! While I believe that the greatest gift you can give yourself is to be a less harsh critic and uplift yourself more, it’s important to also treat yourself once in a while. I love these little ideas!

This is such a lovely post. I’m not a Valentine’s fan in the traditional sense but I’m all for treating yourself on a day dedicated to love. It’s important to look after yourself too and a little gift to me from me always feels good even if it is as simple as a new book or some fancy chocolates x

I LOVE this post! My Valentine’s treats have consisted of a bit of a self-care evening which is massively overdue and much needed after a horrible week, but I love this idea of actually buying yourself a gift as well! Somehow justifying it for yourself is always harder than it should be. Great post – and have a lovely time at the spa!

    • February 15, 2019 / 10:30 pm

Thank you so much! I hope you had a lovely self-care evening and thats definitely another valid way of showing yourself a bit of love! I totally agree with you, and thank you, I did! x

I’m not the best at mentally self-loving but I definitely am in physically buying myself stuff to cheer myself up, oops! My favourite things to buy are DEFINITELY lingerie, beauty items, bath products and food (and lots of it). I’m a huge believer that pampering yourself really does lift your spirits, I make sure I put aside one evening a week to have a really long bath with a face mask/full skincare routine and then an evening in bed doing whatever I feel like doing. PS Hotel Chocolat is my FAVOURITE!

I love the idea of self-love during Valentine’s Day. Yesss, sometimes, we need to spend some time to focus on ourselves. Oooh, new lingerie sounds like a great idea. Sometimes, we need to splurge a bit and get some high-end beauty product. Totally worth the money! OOOOH yasss on fresh flowers! They smell so good~. Thanks for sharing these ideas!

  24. February 16, 2019 / 8:49 am

Completely agree with the self love – I think we all need to do it more! It’s so important to spoil yourself as well as others and I think valentines is the best way to reminding people that. Great suggestions of what to do – I love buying new books… so much so I’ve bought 6 in the last week! It feels good though and makes me feel better about myself which I think is most important. Now’s the time to by flowers and chocolate – discounts here I come!

Me and my partner don’t tend to celebrate too much, but we did order in a Domino’s and watched films/tv shows all evening <3 I love going to TK maxx and buying bed sheets! Sometimes I think we forget how much we ourselves do, and you make a good point – you should at least be your own favorite person! I wouldn’t think of myself as my favorite person, but I’d say it’s a good practice to do because it’s all about acknowledging how amazing you yourself are 🙂

A good treat yourself day is definitely needed every once in a while! It’s great to have something to look forward to – say if you were to treat yourself to something at the end of the month every month/couple of months!

In terms of keeping your mind focused on a book – the app Flora is a great way to focus (you set the time you want to focus for and then you must leave your phone open on the app – It creates a tree of productivity – if you close the app your tree dies).

I recently treated myself to a Rubik’s Cube (really odd I know haha) but I just wanted something challenging that would end up being something fun to do during my spare time 🙂

Great post Sophie! I simply love love haha! I think it’s super nifty you got to have a luxury spa break with your bf! I hope you guys had an awesome time, I’m sure of it though. I got fresh roses for Vday too and they’re actually still alive all now 😯 I didn’t know Laura had bath products actually, I’m only use to their makeup. And might I add that lingerie set in your pic is mega sexy!!!! I think you’re right and I may have to go buy some lol.

New lingerie! This is something that I never give myself the treat to purchasing more often than I want to. I absolutely love coming home with some new lingerie and just feeling super sexy and femme <3
